  • John Banks not seeking re-election

Embattled Act leader John Banks will not stand in next year's general election following a decision yesterday ordering him to stand trial for electoral fraud.

Act Party president John Boscawen announced today via the Act Party website that Mr Banks had decided, after 36 years of public service, to spend more time with his family and his private business interests. He will not be seeking re-election in next year's Genreal Election.
"In the meantime, John will continue as the MP for Epsom and leader of Act," Mr Boscawen said. The announcement comes after Mr Banks lost a bid to avoid trial for alleged electoral fraud.

A High Court judge found there was no basis on which he should interfere with a District Court Judge's decision to commit Mr Banks for trial.
In October, an Auckland District Court judge found there was sufficient evidence for Mr Banks to stand trial on charges of filing a false electoral return on donations made to his campaign for the Auckland mayoralty in 2010.

I see he has chosen trial by Judge alone. Wise choice!! I will put money on the "old boy network" swinging into action and he will be acquitted!! If he had chosen trial by jury, he would be up against ordinary Kiwis who would see through any lies or "I forget".
